Current Connection 3.2

In the article, "Women Still Battling for Equality in Sports", the authors purpose is to state their opinion on the gender roles of sports and to explain why men and women should be equals in the sports world. I believe that men and women should be equal in sports, considering that women train and play just as hard as men.

"It takes more than skill or success for female athletes to be respected and recognized. Many women who do not fit into antiquated ideals of femininity and masculinity will struggle for acceptance and battle unfair criticism and cruelty." Women are equals to men in the real world, so why does this change in the sports world? Women can possess the same skills as men and they can play just as good as the men.

"The most talented, skilled and successful male athletes are deified by society; even those with unsavory personalities or a tendency to get in trouble with the law. As long as they are superior athletes, men will be celebrated and revered." This shows that even male athletes who have a tendency to get in trouble with the law get more publicity than women. This makes no sense.

"Honestly, all most women's sports can do is continue to develop elite athletes/role models, get them as much publicity as possible and hope the eyeballs and money follow." Male athletes get paid more money than female athletes just because society believes that male athletes are more dominant and important.

The connection I am making with this text is to another text. In the article, '

Should women pro athletes get paid the same as men pro athletes?', 50% of people answered yes, while the other 50% said no. "Women work just as hard as men do in sports. They should get paid as much, or men should get paid less. Male athletes get paid RIDICULOUS amounts of money, and some of that money could easily go to female athletes. Just because men are more athletic, shouldn't matter when it comes to the pay women get."

I believe that women should be treated equally in sports. Same publicity, same pay.

Current Connection 3.1

In the article, "Women's sports should be regarded equally as men's sports", the author's purpose is expository. He explains that men and women should be regarded equally when it comes to sports.

The author states, "When it comes to sports, you can catch men’s sports on several popular channels while women’s sports may be more difficult to find." This shows that men are more publicized than women and that men dominate the sports world.

The author also says, "Most people, including myself, have come to the conclusion that men’s sports run the world (sports world) and are publicized far greater than women’s." Women train and work just as hard as the males do, so why do the men get more publicity? This does not seem fair.

"Male athletes were more exciting to watch because they played “more physical” games, Crossland said. “We can dunk, for instance.” Well women, such as Brittney Griner, can dunk also. Many women can dunk, so what makes the males "more physical"?

The connection I am making is to another text. In EspnW's article, 'Women Still Battling For Equality In Sports', Sarah Spain states, "Hopefully women like Brittney Griner, Abby Wambach, Hope Solo and Lolo Jones will continue to impress with their big-game shots and clutch wins, proving that female athletes come in all shapes and sizes and should be celebrated as strong, confident, hard-working and inspiring, just like their male counterparts." Everyone agrees that women should be publicized and looked at the same as males in sports.

So, why do women get less publicity? Do you believe women and men should be looked at equally in sports and in every day life as well?

Lebron comes through again

"The star forward and MVP frontrunner drained a huge left-handed layup in the waning seconds of the Heat's clash with the Orlando Magic to not only pull out the win, but extend the franchise's winning streak for the season to 16 straight games." As always, Lebron James comes out on top and leads the heat to their 16th straight win. Last season, the Heats won the NBA championship and now they are on their way back to the championships, with James leading the way. James finishes every game with an average of 30 points per game. Basketball is my favorite sport and i try to watch every Miami Heat basketball game i can. There was a game on wednesday that i watched and tonight, another game is on, which i will also try to watch. If Miami wins tonight, it will be their 17th straight win. Miami is number one in the eastern conference, and James is nominated for MVP. Whenever Miami is losing, they can count on Lebron to bring them back and get the win. With James leading the way, the Heats are sure to make it back to the championships, where hopefully they will win their second straight championship.

Driving in a circle
More than 3 million rednecks watch nascar. Obviously, people are easily entertained, simply by watching cars drive in a circle. Nascar races generally last 3.5 to 5 hours. I don't watch nascar but obviously lots of people do. How could you be entertained for 3-5 hours simply by watching someone make left turns? You apparently have a really boring life.
"More than 30 people were injured last Saturday after a horrific wreck in a second-tier NASCAR series race sent chunks of debris, including a heavy tire, into the stands." Nascar is so dangerous that even with fences between the track and the stands, people can still get hurt. If you get hurt by simply sitting in a seat and watching a car drive in a circle, you are wasting your time. Watching nascar isn't worth getting hurt and risking your life.

Forgotten Favorite

Forgotten Favorite
Dwyane Wade used to be and still is a Miami Heat star. But now, he has some competition; Lebron James. " Remember Dwyane Wade? He's the guy who once made People magazine's list of the world's 50 most beautiful people, once starred in cell phone commercials with Charles Barkley and once was one of the best players in the NBA. Well, he's still one of the best. It's just he's dropped far enough behind Miami Heat teammate LeBron James that he sometimes gets forgotten." Lebron James is averaging 30 points a game, leading his team to many victories and probably another championship. Not only is James a team leader, he is also a people pleaser. During a game, James ran into the crowd chasing a ball that went out of bounds, and he played catch with a lucky fan in the crowd. Lebron is clearly a star on the rise, and no one in the NBA can compare to him.

Looting, no matter for what reason it is done, is thievery. Some of the thieves on Coney Island "were running in and out of a Rent-A-Center carrying these big flatscreens." I dont understand how someone could steal a flatscreen tv in broad daylight and no one cared. During a time of disaster, people should be focused on helping one another instead of seeking their personal interests. With all the damage already done, it is insane to make the suffering of others worse because of selfish reasons. Others were "running out of a nearby Rite Aid with bags of diapers and wipes." Other people were filling buckets full of water from fire hydrants. I can understand that some people may be in need of supplies during the aftermath of the storm, and I think this can be justified. Those that normally steal will continue to steal, what would make anyone think they would refrain during a catastrophe? They steal every day, whats different today? To seek necessities in a time of need is only natural. I believe looting is theft if it is for selfish reasons, but to survive it can be justified.

Small town

"People in Cord know Royce and Randy Bradley are rock solid, people they can depend on."
I live in Cord and I personally know Royce and Randy Bradley. They are two really good guys and they do a lot to help their community and the people in it. "The brothers have been known to lend a helping hand to many in the community who may find themselves between a rock and a hard place." Randy and Royce own the rock quarry in Cord and Randy helped establish the Cord Volunteer Fire Department. "Royce served as a volunteer firefighter."
"Randy and Royce have donated time and personal equipment to projects that help beautify the town such as tearing down dilapidated buildings." "In a little community everybody knows everybody. You just try to help your neighbor."
As you can see, Randy and Royce Bradley are 2 very caring, helpful people who love helping their community and their neighbors. I believe that more people in the world should be like these two guys.
